For training purposes it is better to use a 13' rod and a floating line for the following reasons:
- spey cast requires to control the D loop on the rear, the position of the anchor (remaining part of the line on the water) and the rotation of the body. With a sinking or intermediate tip this is an additional parameter to control, the extract of the line out of water. In general it is better to overload the rod to load it (for example I use a Sage VT 2 13' for 7 line, giving the best results with a Rio 8/9 line)
- below 12' the effort to propel the line is quite important
